A photography exhibition hidden inside the Gaggenau Vario Cooling Expressive, a refrigeration system with a sculptural character, defined by anthracite surfaces, dark brushed stainless steel and warm, gradual, glare-free LED lighting that almost takes on the role of museum lighting. A space waiting to be discovered that, the moment it is opened, transforms into a museum and becomes the exhibition venue itself.
It is from this everyday gesture that D’ENTRO takes shape: a new site-specific project by Ingar Krauss, conceived for Gaggenau and CRAMUM and curated by Sabino Maria Frassà, making its debut in Turin on 30 and 31 October 2026 on the occasion of Artissima.
Born in East Berlin in 1965, Ingar Krauss is one of the most acclaimed figures in contemporary German photography. Having initially focused primarily on portraiture, he gradually turned his attention to still lifes, fruit, vegetables, flowers and everyday objects. In 2005, he gained wider international recognition with Portraits, published by Hatje Cantz. His works have been exhibited at venues including the Hayward Gallery in London, the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne and the International Center of Photography in New York.
For D’ENTRO, Krauss has created a new series of works using the process that defines his artistic practice: analogue black-and-white photographs subsequently treated with multiple hand-applied layers of oil paint, employing a technique reminiscent of the Flemish painting tradition. The photographic paper gradually absorbs the colour, softens, wrinkles and acquires a material quality that makes each work unique, suspended between photography, painting and object.
Fruit, vegetables and everyday objects are thus removed from their immediate functions and transformed into silent, dense, almost sculptural presences. The images do not simply seem to capture a moment: they extend its duration. Still life becomes a space in which fragility, transformation and permanence can coexist, while photography loses its apparent reproducibility and becomes matter.
“Ingar Krauss does not merely represent what stands before him. Through a slow, analogue and deeply manual process, he removes fruit and objects from their immediate functions and transforms them into presences. It is precisely this ability to hold on to time that gives rise to D’ENTRO: the encounter between the fragility of matter and the image’s capacity to preserve its memory,” explains Sabino Maria Frassà, curator of the project.
The exhibition, which also features artists Franco Mazzucchelli, Fulvio Morella and Carla Tolomeo as special guests, remains invisible until visitors choose to access it. It is their gesture that activates the exhibition: what normally belongs to the realm of consumption and preservation becomes a place of contemplation. Krauss’s photographs have been conceived specifically for this space, transforming the simple act of opening a door into an experience of seeing. In this way, D’ENTRO becomes a reflection on photography, materiality and the possibility of preserving a presence over time.
